Right across the counties of Powys and Shropshire in Mid
Wales there is a huge variety of annual sporting events, car
and bike rallies, festivals and competitions. Almost every
week there is something going on and the central location of
The Forest Bed and Breakfast is ideal for those who wish to
take part of just watch.

Green Man of Clun, Shropshire, May
The
Clun Green Man Festival is a traditional springtime festival,
held on the first May bank holiday weekend of the year and
takes place in the picturesque town of Clun in South
Shropshire. The programme is full of live music, drama, colour
and medieval malarkey and is fun for all the family.
The Clun Green Man is special to Clun. Great trees border his
cloak, their branches interlacing across his chest and,
uniquely, his leaf face is crowned with deer antlers.
Crynant Skeet Clay Pigeon Shoot, Montgomeryshire, May
The
annual team qualifier competition for National Skeet clay
pigeon shoot held at the Mid Wales Shooting Centre.
Mid Wales Shooting Centre has established itself as one of the
premier clay target facilities in the UK. Situated in 300
acres of some of the finest and naturally beautiful
countryside the British Isles has to offer, it is ideally
located, just one hour's drive from the Midlands.
MG Dragon Run, Mid Wales, May
The Dragon Run is a new event which will explore the
country roads of Mid Wales and is open to all MGOC members
from near and far.
The Dragon Run provides an interesting run showcasing the
outstanding scenic beauty of Mid Wales. There is a lot to
admire and savour; far-reaching panoramas stretching in every
direction, bleak brooding mountains just waiting to be climbed
by car, relaxing lakes glinting and rippling in deep valleys,
crashing waterfalls, tumbling rivers and streams, all linked
together with a stimulating mix of roads.
Mid Wales Stages, Mid Wales, June
The
Rally Marketing Mid Wales Historic Stages
55 miles of gravel stages in the classic Mid – Wales forests.
The Mid Wales Stages Rally is also round four of the
Dunlop/Gambia MSA British Historic Rally Championship.
The Mid Wales Stages offers competitors the only chance of the
year to tackle classic forests used on Wales Rally GB,
including Hafren and Myherin. Central servicing will be
located at the Sweet Lamb rally complex near Llangurig, with
the rally again based at Coleg Powys in Newtown.
Dragon Ride, Mid Wales, June

Verenti Dragon Ride cyclosportive is a circular, 40,
130 or 190km non competitive road cycle challenge ride over
the beautiful hills and valleys of South Wales. With around
3000m of climbing, the route takes in the classic Milk
Race/Tour of Britain climbs of the Bwlch, Rhigos and Brecon
Beacons mountain roads.
The Dragon Ride was one of the first annual cyclosportives to
be held in the UK and the first to gain a place on the UCI
calendar. The ride is based at Pencoed, just outside Cardiff and
has excellent road, rail and international air links.
Gregynog Festival, Montgomeryshire, June
Gŵyl
Gregynog Festival, which was established in 1933 by sisters
Gwendoline and Margaret Davies is held in a magnificent
country house set in 750 acres.
The 2010 programme for the oldest classical musical festival
in Wales, the Gregynog Festival, has been curated on a theme
of Pleasure Gardens. They welcome some of the world’s finest
early music groups and performers to the delightful garden
setting of Gregynog in June to recreate
music inspired by gardens of the past.
Royal Welsh Show, Powys, July
The
Royal Welsh Show is one of the most prestigious events of its
type in Europe, and brings together the farming industry and
rural community in a celebration of the best of British
agriculture with a unique and very special ‘Welsh' flavour.
The Royal Welsh Agricultural Society has played a leading role
in the development of agriculture and a vibrant rural economy
in Wales for over a century since its formation in 1904.
Llanidloes Carnival, Montgomeryshire, July
Llanidloes
Carnival has long been a traditional fixture on the summer
calendar of the town. The procession is a chance for people to
exercise their creative talents, and every year we have a
brilliant and very varied display of costumes, floats and
lorries. The parade culminates at Victoria Park football
field, but this is only the start of the fun, as the afternoon
continues with events, games and competitions on the field. A
real family and community event, the carnival is a great
celebration of life in Llanidloes.
Welshpool & Llanfair Steam Gala, Montgomeryshire, August
A
special day for the narrow gauge enthusiast. The journey
begins on the edge of the historic market town of Welshpool.
Right from the start it is all action as the train battles up
the notoriously steep Golfa Bank accompanied by the sound of
the locomotive echoing off the hills.
From the coaches you will see the beautiful mid Wales
countryside roll slowly by as you travel into the delightful
Banwy Valley.
The journey unfolds through this picturesque part of Wales
travelling along the River Banwy and ending in Llanfair
Caereinion.
Welsh Food Festival,
Montgomeryshire, September
The Welsh Food Festival is held at the
stunning private Glansevern Hall Gardens midway between
Welshpool and Newtown, the festival not only offers 20 acres
of sumptuous gardens to enjoy but an amazing array of food -
related activities.
Wales' top chefs demonstrated their skills in the cookery
theatre. There were lots of ideas to get one enthused, and
lots of recipes to try at home. Over 100 producers fill the
courtyard, gardens and beyond at Glansevern Hall. From cakes,
chutneys and cheeses to wines, ales and chocolates – there
will be plenty of food and drink to tantalise the taste buds
of young and old alike.
Vaynor Festival, Mid Wales, September
A
gentle 90-120 mile "tulip"route through unfrequented roads in
magnificent border country with tests of skill and observation
enroute, time off lunch in a special location, finishing at a
wonderful private country house, Vaynor Park, (near Welshpool)
for afternoon tea.
Open to any enthusiats in any vehicle, the emphasis is on fun
with a classic spirit. Start from the famous National Trust
Powis Castle, Welshpool with reception and breakfast in the
restaurant
Across Wales Walk, Wales, September
Every year, a group of ramblers gather at the border
between Powys and Shropshire with the single aim of walking
the width of Wales in a day. Nominally the route is 45 miles
long from the English border at Anchor near Clun in
Shropshire, to the Welsh coast at Clarach near Aberystwyth.
The route traverses paths, tracks, unclassified roads and open
country, including Plynlimon. Almost every type of terrain is
encountered: tarmac, rough track, forest, farmland, open
moorland and bog. Not surprisingly therefore, the event
requires strength, stamina and endurance
Mid Wales Opera at Theatr Hafren, Montgomeryshire, September
Fantastic melodies including the celebrated Barcarolle, the
“Doll’s Song” and the “Jewel Aria”, a fascinating story of
passion, comedy and tragedy within a supernatural framework,
all combine to make up an exhilarating evening of theatre,
tailor-made for Mid Wales Opera’s uniquely entertaining style.
Founded in 1988, Mid Wales Opera has established itself as one
of the foremost British touring opera companies. Recipient of
various national awards, including two Prudential Opera
Awards. Mid Wales Opera's productions have now been performed
in over eighty venues in Great Britain and Ireland.
Plains Rally, Mid Wales, September
Competitors are welcome to Welshpool for the Plains Rally supported by LICO Wheels.
The Plains made its debut as a road rally based in the lanes
of the Cheshire Plain from which it derived its name. Under
the guiding hand of its creator Alan Jolley it grew in
stature, a major decision being to move the event from
Cheshire to the more demanding and exciting lanes of Wales.
This astute move completely changed the nature of the event
and the new format became an immediate success with
competitors.
Cyclo Sportive, Wales, October
The Autumn Epic
is a European-style cyclosportive, starting in Knighton in the
Welsh Marches and taking you through the superb scenery of the
ancient county of Radnorshire. Now in its fourth year, the
Epic is an ideal way to round off your season and make great
use of that summer fitness.
Radnorshire is near perfect cycling territory, with its
unspoilt countryside and peaceful roads. You will be taken you
through some truly outstanding scenery, including hills,
lakes, valleys and moorland. The ride highlights include the
Elan Valley mountain road, Glascwm and Abbey Cwm Hir climbs.
Santa Run, Montgomeryshire, December
Participate in the Newtown event of the year and raise
money for good causes!
Each year thousands of Santas descend on Newtown to take part
in 4.5 mile festive charity fun run organised by the charity
Newtown and District Dial A Ride.
Over the past six years, Santa Run has raised hundreds of
thousands of pounds for good causes, national and
international.
All of these events are within in short drive of our B&B
accommodation.
